Each axis of the CNC machinery has a linear system to move the vehicle to its desired location, includes Ball Screws or Rack and Pinion.

A rack and pinion is a type of linear actuator that comprises a circular gear (the pinion) engaging a linear gear (the rack), which operate to translate rotational motion into linear motion. Driving the pinion into rotation causes the rack to be driven linearly. Driving the rack linearly will cause the pinion to be driven into a rotation.

- Pros: 1. Cheaper to make. 2. Can be assembled together, thus more cost effective for long linear travels.
- Cons: 1. Top speed is lower. 2. Due to the gap between pinion tooth and rack tooth, it generally has lower re-positioning accuracy. 3. Higher power consumption and faster wear and tear due to its high inherent friction.

A ball screw is a mechanical linear actuator that translates rotational motion to linear motion with little friction. A threaded shaft provides a helical raceway for ball bearings which act as a precision screw. As well as being able to apply or withstand high thrust loads, they can do so with minimum internal friction. It's mostly seen on high-end products.

- Pros: 1. Higher top speed. 2. Close contact between ball bearing and the helical screw provides high re-positioning accuracy. 3. Little internal friction grants lower power consumption and much slower wear and tear if maintained properly.
- Cons: 1. More expensive to make. 2. Cost is prohibitive for long linear travels.

Servo motor is considered as closed-loop motor as it move on receipt of a command signal from their controller, with built-in encoders that continuously communicate back to the controller, which makes any needed adjustments to ensure the target position is reached.

Traditional stepper motors is considered as open-looped motor since it "steps" when they receive a command to advance a certain number of pulses, it does not aware the potential "missing steps" due to stall or skip. By adding an encoder and operating in closed-loop mode, stepper motor systems can achieve position monitoring and control much like servo motors.

Closed-loop stepper motors eliminate many of the disadvantages of traditional open-loop stepper systems, making them similar in performance to servo motors. But servo motors outperform even closed-loop steppers in applications that require high speed, high torque at high speed, or the ability to handle changing loads.

Generally, an automatic tool changer or ATC is used to improve the capacity of the machine to work with several tools. It is also used to change worn out or broken tools. Without ATC, an operator is required to monitor and shut down the machinery to replace tools. An ATC can boost your production effectively in the following scenarios:

- The tool worn out quickly, or tools are being changed out frequently.
- The machining process requires multiple tools.
- The machining process takes a few days, tool change happens during off-hours.

Often in times, we need to rotate the workpiece in order to let spindle reach the desired place. Or we can using a 4-th axis to programmatically rotate the workpiece for us. For CNC Routers, there are two solutions:

1. Add the 4th axis to spindle, so it tilts sideways.
- Pros: Can work on curved surfaces with larger radius. Has more applications.
- Cons: Can only finishes half dome. More Expensive. Must be installed before leaving factory.

2. Add the 4th axis to workpiece, so it rotates along the axis.
- Pros: Can rotate the workpiece so all 360 degrees can be finished. Could be added as ad-hoc widget.
- Cons: Not an ideal option for heavy materials. Max radius is limited.
